Softlayer spam
Digital chat-up lines
I’ve been getting comment spam from Softlayer, specifically 74.86.186.66. It takes the form of a post praising a posting with a couple keywords related to the domainname of the spam site in question. In this case, it was a site called apple.whatever.com (not the real domainname) containing links to what I’d assume would be spam. Here’s an example:
Wretched lassitude

Here’s a quick excerpt
One of my colleagues emailed me today …
I guess the idea is for the busy blogger to look at the site name and the apparent praise and just approve it without looking into it. Well, sorry Softlayer, I’ve heard it all before.
The applesauce thickens
The Mac trojan I mentioned before has gotten more complicated. One of our consultants wasn’t able to see the IPs in /etc/resolv.conf like I mentioned in my instructions on how to find the Mac trojan before. The student dropping off the infected Mac had been calling the desk like every half an hour to complain before that point, and then decided to throw a temper tantrum, threatening to have his dad bring hellfire down on the group if we didn’t unlock his machine immediately. I rather wish he had told his father to call us. Here’s what I would imagine I’d have had to say to him:
Sorry, Mr B, it seems your son has wrecked that nice Mac you bought for him by browsing porn sites instead of doing his homework. We tried to help him to clear it up before finals, and hopefully before some Ukrainian mafiosi stole his credit card and social security number, but it seems he’s more interested in wasting your time and ours. I’m sure you’ll share my sentiments when I tell you I truly hope it was good porn.
In any case, we gave him the benefit of the doubt, but within hours we locked him up again because the Mac was back to its old tricks. Sorry Charlie (not his first name, nor is his last name “B”).
