f/p (the warning shot)
Hello everyone and welcome to my new blog. Some of you may have read stuff I’d done on livejournal or blogger, so you know I’m not new to blogging. So, why a new blog? Hosting it myself gives me a lot more toys to play with. And if you know me, you know I love my toys.
The new blog will serve a bunch of purposes. Firstly, it’ll be a good tool for accountability. I don’t mean that in the sense of having my readers keep me from embezzling people’s retirement funds or downloading dirty dirty porn, but as a way of making my life somewhat transparent so that people can help me become a better man. If I’m not doing my work, or not exercising, or not studying, I’ll post that so that people will know to bug me about it. Nothing helps people walk the narrow path like the spectre of People Will Know! And it’s a lot less intrusive than paying a personal assistant to follow me around with a clipboard and a taser!
Secondly, it’ll be a place for me to talk about the latest projects I’m working on. I’m kind of an inventor and tinkerer, so usually there’s something cool I’m working on. Whether it’s a new dish I’m cooking, a new kind of wine I’m making, some cool computer project, or something weird and artistic that even I don’t completely understand, there’s always an opportunity for some interesting show and tell.
Thirdly, as with all blogs, it’ll be a good place for me to summarize lessons I’ve learned from life. Why make all of the mistakes yourself if you can learn from mine? And when I get it right, you can steal my recipes for success. My favorite blogs are the ones where people share their secrets, even if the secret is “For the love of God and everything holy, DO NOT do the following…”
Finally, in order to keep my creative juices from completely evaporating, I need to do some kind of creative writing from time to time. Like an artist’s sketchbook, or an engineer’s lab notebook of evil contraptions, this blog will be a place for me to make napkin drawings of my ideas.
So, for accountability’s purpose, I’ll state up front that I intend to post at least once a week. Some of the projects I’m working on might lend themselves to postings. I’m working on a secure disposable laptop solution for traveling businessmen, a new spam filtration company that beats most of what’s out there right now (perhaps all, but my dataset is still pretty small), and a bunch of smaller home projects which people might find interesting. I’ll try to keep things positive, since if I’ve learned anything from my life thus far, it’s that dwelling on the negative is pure poison for the soul. Ranting is fun, but without something useful to go with it, it’s no more nutritious than a diet of candy.
So, stay tuned for more…
